The weather in Mauritius is suitable for tourists and visitors. The island offers pleasant weather conditions all year round, with the sun shining over the head. Therefore, your visit to the country will be comfortable weather-wise no matter what time of the year you go to the region.

The sunsets at its highest point due to the location of Mauritius near the Tropic of Capricorn. The days here are longer as compared to other regions across the globe and are accompanied by bright sunny skies.

However, we can say that Mauritius has a microclimate that varies from region to region. While one part of the island is characterized by dark grey skies, the other is blessed with a bright, sunny climate. Various tourist attractions in Mauritius are also created to allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful weather of the country.

The island is mostly composed of two seasons, Summer and Winter. Summers start in November and end in April, whereas winter begins in May and subsides around October. The entire year does not encounter drastic changes in temperature and climate. However, minor changes are still common.

Climatic Variations In Mauritius:

The temperature of the country ranges from 19° C to 28° C. There are not many variations when we talk about temperature, and that is why the locals consistently relish the weather all year round. Here are some climatic details of the region to get you familiarized with the weather conditions in case you are planning a trip to the island.

Sunshine:

The sun stays longer during the summer, from 5 o’clock to 7 o’clock in the evening. As winter arrives, it becomes a little less warm and shows up for only twelve hours, from 6 am to 6 pm. The Northern region stays under sunlight for an extra hour throughout the year.

If we look at the Eastern regions and the Central Plateau, the sun sets one hour earlier during summer as well as winter months. The sunshine and sunset in Mauritius are also a treatment for sore eyes, so make sure to find a point for viewing these at least once during your visit.

Rain:

The people who live in Mauritius know that if it is raining in one part of the country, it is absolutely common for the sun to shine only a few kilometers away at the same time. If you find that the sky is becoming grey, signifying rainfall, do not be worried. Wait for a few hours, and you’ll see that the sun is coming back with full energy.

Rainfall in Mauritius is highly variable and is found to appear more often in certain regions only. While the annual rainfall within the North coast has been recorded to be 1100mm, the Central Plateau encounters a lot more than that.

Additionally, the distribution of rain is not very uniform. The summer months are characterized by a marked wet period that is followed by dry months starting from June. The days of rainfall are measured to be 7 during the wettest months and only 1 day in the dry period through October to November. This means that you are unlikely to encounter rainfall if you are visiting during the summer break or staying near the North coast.

Sea Conditions:

During summer, the water becomes inevitably hotter, whereas, in winter, it drops, making the sea colder. However, whether you are visiting the island in summer or winter, the temperature will be pleasant and comfortable for swimming.

During summers, sea temperature ranges from 27 to 28° C whereas it drops to 23° C to 25° C around the colder days. Sometimes strong anticyclones can cause the sea temperature to fall drastically and reach up to  2° C to 3° C.

Winds:

The wind in Mauritius blows towards the North from the Eastern direction to run across the region steadily. From May to September, trade winds are the most constant. In the summers, winds head towards the southern and eastern regions of the country.

On the other hand, the mountains of the north and west protect these areas from harsh winds. This is the reason why the north and west are known to have the most amazing beach weather. Be wary of trade winds and chilling blows if you are visiting the east or south during the winter months.

Here are some features of the Mauritius weather. If you are considering a visit, the best time to book a flight is after November, as this is when you’ll find the sun at its peak. You can enjoy bright sunny days or go hiking in Mauritius in the North. You can also consider visiting the Southern region if you would like to explore the mountains and rich natural parks.
